Nutrition at Save-On-Foods!

On Friday, we went to another fantastic place in our Community: our local grocery store, Save-On-Foods. We had two wonderful Nutritionists lead us through the four Food Groups. Wow, did we learn a lot!

In the Fruit and Vegetable group, we learned that it is very important to make sure we have 5 servings (for ages 4-8) a day. As well, this group is full of vitamins and minerals to help us stay healthy!

When adventuring through a sample section of the Grain group, we explored different types of cereals. We learned the importance of eating Grains that are high in Fibre because it helps you go to the bathroom! When we looked at the cereal boxes, we noticed that many of our favourite cereals were low in Fibre and high in Sugar! Oops!

In the Milk and Alternatives group, we discussed the importance of Calcium, especially being growing children! Did you know that the only time in your life that you can strengthen your bones with Calcium is when you are growing!? That means it is very important to make sure we get enough Calcium every day! Unfortunately, because for many it's our favourite, but we learned how those yogurt tubes are not the best choice-- they are full of sugar! In this section, we also talked about Processed cheese versus Natural cheese. Thumbs up to Natural cheese!

In the Meat and Alternative section, we discussed eating a variety of things in this category. This can be chicken, fish, pork, beef, tofu, eggs, legumes, or anything that is a nut. Yes, that even means Peanut  Butter! Yum!

Happy and healthy eating!

Love,
